Camping “in” can be loads of fun , but some parents are hesitant to bring the kind of junk food that comes along with the experience into their houses. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to keep camping in healthy and fun at the same time. Here are some great ideas for getting in some nutrition without cramping the camping style.

Trail Mix

Trail mix is the quintessential camping food for the healthy snacker. It’s got loads of healthy goodies like nuts (almonds, cashews, walnuts), seeds (flax, sunflower, pumpkin), and fruit (raisins, cranberries, dried apples or papaya). You can buy ready-made packs or create your own mix with your kids favorite treats. Give each child their own packet, and they’ll be ready to go!

Corn on the Cob

Another classic campfire food, corn on the cob, is loaded with nutritious value such as antioxidants, lutein, and zeaxanthin. On top of the generous helping of daily dietary fiber, fresh corn is delicious and a favorite among kids of every age.

Forest Berries

Berries are rampant around most forest regions, and so they make the ideal camping treat. They’re also sweet and known as superfoods because they are loaded up with antioxidants and polyphenols. There’s also a variety of them to choose from, so kids can take their pick.

Don’t Forget Dinner!

Just because they’re camping, doesn’t mean kids shouldn’t enjoy a healthy dinner. Hot dogs are the typical camping food. Add a baked potato on the side, and you’ve got a crackerjack camping meal. Mac N’ Cheese is another way to get kids eating some real food while still keeping with the theme. Place the wacky mac or other cheesy combo into a disposable pan, and brown the top for that authentic campfire taste.
